Biography

Gunhyuk Park, Ph. D, is an assistant professor in School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in Korea from 2019. He received the BS and Ph. D in Computer Science and Engineering from Pohang University of Science and Technology in 2007 and 2017, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Haptic Intelligence department at Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in 2018 and 2019. His main research area is haptics, which is a study about the sense of touch, and its applications with in-depth perception study for better user performance and experiences. His research has been applied to mobile devices, automobiles, motion-based remote controllers, surgical robots, and assistive interface for the hearing impaired

Abstract

Many computer-interactive applications have been designed to interact with users to provide various user experiences and information via the visual and auditory feedback. Haptics, which is a study about the sense of touch, has fascinated and inspired researchers to design interactive user interfaces and plays a central role for providing rich, immersive, and fun user experiences to users with visual and/or auditory feedback. For several decades, many haptic researchers have proved that haptic feedback can improve multiple facets of user experience including task performance, analyzing and utilizing user perception, and substituting other sensory modalities. This talk introduces the basic concepts of haptics and the research conducted by the speaker that improved user experiences in his previous research institutes.
