Future of Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality and Samsung’s New Challenge
Dr. SungHoon Hong, Vice-President of Samsung Electronics, received M. S. and Ph. D degrees in electronics engineering and electrical engineering from Seoul National University, Korea in 1994 and 1999, and participated in the research on the new media compression and transmission systems. He joined Nsystem Communications located in San Diego, CA as a Senior Research Staff Member to lead the development of DSP part of the CDMA modem chip from 2000 to 2002. From 2002 to 2008 he co-found WintonHaus in San Diego, CA as Chief Technical Officer to lead the development of high-speed visual compression engine. From 2008 to 2010 he co-found Atomm and Atomm Research in San Diego, CA and Madison, WI to develop a new visual media compression technology. In 2010 he was invited to Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute in Korea to lead the research on storytelling media compression technology to mimic the human brain functionality. After this invited research works in 2015 he joined Bent Image Lab in Portland, OR to lead the development of ultralight weight computer vision technology and augmented reality eco-system. Now he is leading the research and development and business expansion of Augmented Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and a next generation multimedia technology in Samsung Electronics in Korea as Vice President.

Keynote Speech – Abstract
The speech will cover the latest trend in augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligent (AI) technology. The requirements emerged for the AR and AI technology include 3D space modeling, camera and object pose estimation, interaction, photorealistic rendering, physics-based object modeling and augmented virtual reality displays. Especially the keynote will provide a Samsung’s new roadmap of three key areas of the AR and AI technology: 1) augmented visualization and graphics, 2) AI based object and context recognition and 3) AR display. In the augmented visualization part I will present the current status of graphics technology to show the visualization capability make users not to distinguish the real and virtual objects in the mixed objects environment. In the object and context recognition part the new challenge of AI technology of context and object recognition is introduced. And the challenges to make the new type of AR display are presented, and the new AR head-mount display with stereo-cam, the light-field and holographic display and glasses are introduced.
