[Abstract]

Congruency, perceptual harmony between different modalities, has become an important keyword in recent human-computer interaction design. To achieve it, understanding the users: how they perceive and respond, and its modeling are crucial, especially in interaction scenarios involving touch interactions. However, unfortunately, how to achieve the goal still remains a question. To help this situation, in this talk, the perceptual and affective response models based on user study results will be introduced, as well as practical guidelines in interaction design from the models. Lastly, haptic human-computer interaction applications that exploit the models in practice will be presented.

[Biography]

Yongjae Yoo is an assistant professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Hanyang University ERICA. He received BS and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from POSTECH in 2011 and 2019, respectively. Before joining Hanyang University, he was a postdoctoral research associate in Haptics and Virtual Reality Laboratory (currently Interaction laboratory), POSTECH and Shared Reality Laboratory, McGill University. His Ph. D. work includes an extensive investigation of perceptual and affective characteristics of haptic stimuli. He has also conducted several haptic human-computer interaction (HCI) projects. He is currently seeking how to build smart, immersive, and rich interactions between humans and machines.
