Reading pain and emotions from the brain, language, and faces: Building new digital markers

Biography: Choong-Wan (Wani) is the director of the Computational Cognitive Affective Neuroscience lab. His research focuses on understanding how the human brain represents, processes, and regulates pain and emotions. He received his dual PhD in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience and the Institute of Cognitive Sciences from the University of Colorado, and MA in Clinical psychology and BS in Biology from Seoul National University. He is currently an assistant professor at the IBS Center for Neuroscience Imaging Research and the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU).

 

Abstract: 정밀한 뇌지도, brain connectome을 만들기 위해 전 세계가 노력하고 있습니다. 하지만, 뇌지도를 만드는 것만큼 중요한 것은 바로 그 “의미”, 즉 뇌의 활성화 및 연결 패턴이 만들어내는 인간의 인지 및 정서 기능을 이해하는 것입니다. 본 강연에서 저는 뉴로이미징과 머신러닝 등을 이용하여 개개인의 통증 경험을 측정하고 예측하고자 진행했던 연구들을 소개하고자 합니다. 또한 현재 연구실에서 새롭게 진행하고 있는 뇌, 생리신호, 언어, 얼굴 표정 등을 통합적으로 이용하여 통증과 감정을 예측하고 측정하고자 하는 연구를 소개할 것입니다. 이러한 뇌와 행동 기반 예측 모델들은 새로운 형태의 디지털 마커로서 가까운 미래에 개인 맞춤형 정밀 의료의 중요한 도구로 자리매김할 것입니다.
